Chapter Nine

“Awesome. The cops are already here,”

she noted excitedly. “Final y, someone in law

enforcement has listened to me.” Luna

watched the empty police cruiser, wondering if

the sight of it would deter the would-be

criminals. She hoped so. But she doubted it.

“I do not like it here. The area is too lightly

guarded. There are too many open fields. We

are mere targets here,” Pulse said, looking

about them alertly.

“Just be patient with me for a few minutes.

I want to make sure the cops stay until the

crooks show up,” she said. Luna glanced at

her watch, pressing a button on the side to

illuminate the dial in the darkness. “Only seven

more minutes, okay?”

“A lot can happen in seven minutes,” Pulse

pointed out stonily.

Luna was quiet for a long while, thinking.

“There’s going to be a plane crash in

Philadelphia tonight,” she said at last, softly.

“Wil anyone be hurt?” he asked, his voice

equally soft.

Luna nodded. “Yeah. Eight will die, but

twelve will survive with only a few minor

injuries.”

“How does it happen? Can you see that?”

he asked gently.

She cleared her throat nervously. Luna still

wasn’t used to sharing her predictions with

anyone else. “One of the engines will catch fire

because of an electrical defect missed by the

technicians who checked the plane before

takeoff. It’l go down pretty fast, in a patch of

woods just outside the city limits. Thank god

it’s just a small plane or more could die.”

Pulse looked around them, glowing gaze

piercing thorough the darkness to search for

anything out of the ordinary. “How do you

know these things? Do you have visions?

Does the knowledge come to you? How does

your gift work?”

Luna let out a whoosh of breath. “Wel , it’s

like a switch goes off in my brain and I

suddenly know, without any self-doubt, what is

going to happen. I don’t real y have visions per

se, though I do see some images in my mind

when the realizations come. I just... know

things. It’s as though I’ve always known them,

but have only just uncovered the memory.

Does that make sense?”

“And you can predict things that will

happen far away?”

“Yeah. Sometimes.” Luna thought for a

moment. “But most of the time I know about

things that will happen close to me. It’s almost

like a torture device—my premonitions hit

close to home, giving me the chance to try to

change the outcome. I always take the

chance, but I always fail. My predictions aren’t

very useful,” she admitted sourly.

They were parked down the road from the

bank, just able to see the patrol car out front.

Luna glanced at her watch then looked back at

the bank. She saw a dark figure emerge from

the entrance and head towards the car. It was

a lone police officer. He got into the car and

cranked it up, and Luna cried out in protest.

“No!” Luna wailed. “Damn it, he only needs

to stay a few more minutes! Why is he leaving

—I told them the exact time to be here!”

The patrol car pulled out of its parking

space and headed down the road away from

them. Luna watched it, tears of frustration in

her eyes, until the vehicle disappeared into the

darkness. “No. No!” She pounded angrily on

the steering wheel. “God, why are people so

stupid?” she growled, unbuckling her seat belt

and reaching for the handle of the door.
